Lighting Lab Residency at the Point

Work in Progress for a live show - a visual composition and dramaturgie of a dialogue between light and dance - following a Lighting Lab residency  at the 'Point'  Black Theatre Space-
We explored different states of light, by also starting to use the projection as a source of light.
In collaboration with aerial dancer Ali Jones, the piece explores the illusion and reality of a body in space, in the air -  how it appears in a site specific space, and how the quality of a light states influence our view, narrative of the body dancing.

'Magic and real'

After one week of residency, this is the final

composition of narration of our piece work in progress. This skecth is a paper I made

as  a reminder of the narrative, like a storyboard, that funnily enough took the shape of an editing timeline.

It is all about creating narratives.

Here is the narration between the light as an entity and the movements of the body in this space.

How it appears, and disappears, how it feels

unreal, we can just about see a body in the air - giving it a magical feel - to being able to place it in that concrete theatre space.

All the lights were very subtle, giving a quality to the 'small' - the 'little' - bring to life  the sounds of the rope unfolding and touching the ground. Making the audience unease and also mesmerized.

Our final decision was to place

a reflector just under the rope - the light will be aiming at the reflector and the dimm of the light would light or not the body on the rope.

It was very subtle light  to start with.

That space near the reflector was a place of light, where Ali appeared and disappeared from.

We never entirely could see the whole rope from ceiling to ground.

At times the reflector would enirely disappear.

It was an improvised dialogue, narration between 2 forms, 2 artists, the light and the aerial dancer.

the Different states of light were

very subtle.

Sadly this documentation doesn't do it justice - it was a whole visual composition on stage. However you can how these states of light were looking at talking with Ali's movements or going against her movements.

there were guiding her movements as well as vice versa.

The lights we used, were birdies on the top aiming at teh rope, so Ali would go and meet that light, or they would come and find her.

there is also that reflector on the floor that appears and disappears.

At the end of the piece, residency, we just start experimenting by incorporating pre-recorded video projections. Again we were looking at re-shaping that space and what quality it gave to the body movement in that space.

We were not looking at separating the video projections as a background.

A Sample of a pre-edited footage I created based on Ali's Choreography and aerial dance.

We use these type of footage, edits for our video projection experiments seen above.
